| 'Abstaining from the Counsel of the Ungodly' |
Weeds are plants that are considered undesirable especially when they grow where they are not wanted. They are plants like any other, but when they grow in our lawn or garden, they can overpower the real plants by reducing its soil nutrients and moisture. If no restriction is imposed, they can increase the cost of cultivation and further cause health hazards to humans and animals as well.
Tailoring this to the real world, weeds are considered to be toxic people who unashamedly, are the major carriers of ungodly counsel, the devil inclusive. They never bring good news. These are people who find a purpose in your weaknesses and fall out of place in your strengths. They constantly criticize your goals and ambitions and try to hold you back and not let you grow. The easiest way to identify this caliber of people is by knowing the kind of void they fill in whenever they are around you. If they absolutely have nothing edifying to say, nothing encouraging and uplifting to keep you moving and on track, then they are obviously weeds and must be sieved out.
It is tragic that many of us hardly recognize ungodly counsel "any advice contrary to the bible" when it presents itself. Many people run to shelters and are subject to godless wicked advice from total losers that are destroying their lives, marriages and careers. It might sometimes seem very difficult to tell who is genuine, especially if the person counselling you happens to be a bosom friend or a close relative. Ungodly counsel is everywhere around us in the society. From the television, to the type of books we read, the internet, our friends, colleagues, the court system and even many fake churches around the globe. If the messages passed across do not line up with God’s word, you have no business with them. Weed them out!
I get marveled when I see ladies seeking advice from pant- wearing hussies who don’t live by the Word. Of course, they are not going to give you GODLY counsel. You take your marital issues to your aunt or friend who has been divorced, frustrated and bitter for years and doesn’t see anything good in men; she will definitely recommend you leave your husband with immediate effect. Whereas, God himself is against divorce. Matt 19:6. While you think she is helping you save your relationship, she’s busy fanning the flames and even throwing petrol on the fire. If a woman is not totally committed to her husband, she is likely to destroy her marriage by filing for divorce. “Every wise woman builds her home, but the foolish plucks it down with her own hands… Proverbs 14:1” Marriage is a lifetime commitment, not a temporal agreement.
Now how do we sieve ourselves from these contaminants? Who should we first seek in times of despair?
- The Holy Spirit: We all need the help of the Holy Spirit whether we like it or not.
The Holy Spirit directs us to the right people to approach who will give us godly counsel that will quicken our spirit man and mortal bodies.
- Safeguard your heart: Proverbs 4:23 - "Above all else, guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it flows the issues of life".
(i) Your heart is extremely valuable: It is the essence of who you are. It is your authentic self. It's not a garbage zone where people go out throw their waste products on a Wednesday night and it gets picked up on a Thursday morning. Your heart is priceless and shouldn't be porous to any unhealthy counsel.
(ii) Your heart is a source of everything you do: According to King Solomon, he says the heart is the wellspring of life. If you poison the water, the flow becomes toxic. The heart overflows into words, thoughts and deeds.
(iii) Your heart is under constant attack: It is Satan's ultimate goal to see the children of God fall prey to his antics. He uses different weapons to fight us, that is why we need the sword which is the Word of God as our weapon of warfare in the battlefield.
Weeds are extremely toxic and we should learn to abstain from toxic people. We should learn to sieve them out from our system. God's word has already been made available to shape and guide us. It is His desire that we do not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of the scornful. Rather, let our delight be in the law of the Lord, and in his law, we shall meditate day and night.
Remain and Stay Blessed!

I read your post and laughed. Laughed because in the past I did the very you discussed: took advice from ungodly people. I have since learned to consider the source when seeking counsel or just for someone to talk to.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I'm glad you later on realized the advice was ungodly and of course, the people as well. It’s very paramount to access the kind of people we seek counsel from. Not everyone is genuinely seeking for our good.
