Want to be PMP CERTIFIED?

PROJECT MANAGEMENT is one of the world’s most trending professions today. It’s designed to gain in depth knowledge, competencies, skills, tools, and projects that achieve organizational goals on time and budget.

The Project Management Professional (PMP) is the most important globally-recognized and independently validated credential for project managers, perfect if you have demonstrated experience and competence in leading project teams.

Requirements needed to be certified as a Project Management Professional:

1.      First, you have to apply for PMI membership. The Project Management Institute (PMI) is one of the world’s largest not-for-profit membership associations for the project management profession. It's highly recognized all over the world. Regular and student rates apply. To learn more, visit www.pmi.org. Also consider applying to your local chapter. (Note: This is done directly through PMI, not the chapter). Once done, it automatically adds you to the mailing list for upcoming events and workshops. Discount rate also applies.

2.      As a registered member, you can download a free copy of the PMBOK, 5th edition. It's available in 10 different translations. (Chinese Simplified, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Korean, Russia, Spanish including sections of the Arabic translation).

3.      Obtain 35 hours of Project management education.

4.      The following relevant education or work experience can make you eligible:

Four-year degree: Minimum 3 years of PM experience, with 4,500 hours leading and directing projects
OR
No degree: Minimum 5 years of PM experience, with 7,500 hours leading/directing projects
OR
Less work experience: Consider applying for the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) credential. This is an entry level designation offered by PMI. Very important: Hiring managers tend to prefer candidates with this credential even if they have no related work experience.

5.      Summarize relevant work experience listing each project and job descriptions. Ensure job description involves each of the 5 process groups: Initiating, planning, executing, controlling and closing.  Attach employment references for each project carried out.

6.      Submit your detailed application to PMI to write PMP exam. A printable form has already been made available. If you need info and tips on how to prepare for exam, use the PMP Exam Guidiance.

7.      Once application is approved by PMI, schedule the computer based exam at local testing center. Exam usually takes 4hours, 200 multiple choice questions. Pass or fail, results reflect immediately. Upon PMI granting the credential, maintain continuing education requirements, minimum 60hrs/3years.

For more general information, consult the PMP Handbook.

Best of luck.
